Archival historyThis flag was flying over Telefonica House in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War. It was taken down as Franco entered the city and brought to the UK by Jimmy Shand, a member of the Young Communist League who had been broadcasting in English during the last few hours before Madrid fell to Franco's troops. He gave it to Hilda Froom for safe keeping when war broke out in 1939, and she passed it to the Library in 1989, the 50th anniversary year of the fall of Madrid.
