Scope and ContentPlate commisioned by the Trades Union Congress to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The names of the Martyrs are printed around the top of the plate, "George Loveless: James Loveless: John Standfield: Thomas Standfield: James Hammett: James Brine." The bottom of the plate is a quote from a poem: "...We raise the watchword Liberty. We will, We will, We will, be free!!" receited by George Loveless. Top of the plate; Text "Tolpuddle Martyrs" Bottom of the plate: Text "1834 - 1984". The illustration shows the six farm labourers chained together boarding the ship which will take them to New South Wales and Van Dieman's Land.
