David Whiteley worked at Ward and Goldstone’s from 1970 until 1985, following in the footsteps of his father, who also worked there. He started at the company as an apprentice, and went on to work on the shop floor, followed by being a toolmaker and finally leaving to become an insurance salesman.
In the interview he talks about working conditions and health and safety, as well as mentioning the best and worse factors of working for the company, the best being the banter and humour of the shop floor and the worst part being the pay. Other elements of working life spoken of are the social life, with inter-factory tournaments, for darts, badminton and football as well as Christmas gifts. David also elaborates on the Union and a couple of characters from his time there. He finishes talking about family and career regrets.
