The NPC was set up by Jack Jones when he retired from the Transport and General Workers' Union in 1978 He realised that there wasn't a national organisation to speak up for pensioners. The first Convention was held in 1979 and 2,500 people attended. Regional organisations were encouraged to join. Jack Jones was national president from 1992-2000: his papers are held at the Modern Records Centre Warwick (MSS 625/3/4)
